I blame VH1 for my decrease in productivity. I try not to turn it on when I have things to do, but if any of the above artists' videos are playing, it's mandatory that I stop what I am doing and watch...and maybe dance...and reminisce...and rewind (I have DVR)...and watch again. Keith Sweat does sound a bit like Froggy from "The Little Rascals," but you can't tell me that his first CD isn't a classic. Teddy Riley was the man. New Jack Swing was the ish.

Randy Bandit:

New Jack SwingNew Jack Swing was the soundtrack to my junior high and high school years. It was just something about those beats! Up until that time, I didn't really do many of the newer dance steps. I was stuck in that Kid N Play phase, until I saw Guy pumping across the stage. It was like dance music had grown an attitude. To say that I bought just about everything that Teddy Riley produced would not be an understatement. It wasn't long before New Jack Swing went commercial though. I mean, Michael Jackson let Teddy do almost an entire album. It was good while it lasted, that sweet spot from 1987 to about 1991 or so.But even today, when I hear a new jack swing beat, I feel my shoulders start to pop and my feet start to slide. What do you do when someone pumps Guy's "I Like"? You go with the flow--twenty years later!
